Freyssinet has installed the prestressing on the Žilina Viaduct, which forms part of the D3 motorway bypass in the north of Slovakia.
Freyssinet was selected to supply the prestressing for the Žilina Viaduct, a 1,500-m long structure erected over the Hričov reservoir, created by damming the country's longest river, the Váh. In total, between 2017 and 2018, Freyssinet supplied 1,100 tonnes of prestressing tendons, 110 bearings and expansion joints.
With a sub-structure resting on 57 columns embedded directly in the Hričov dam, the Žilina Viaduct was a challenging project. A dedicated road was built to access the reservoir, so that the water level could be monitored and managed at all times.
As part of the D3 motorway which provides a direct link between the capital, south-western Slovakia, and Poland, this viaduc improve national and cross-border transport conditions, ease the flow and speed of traffic and enhance road safety.
