This structure is part of an infrastructure project linking a new border post with China and the Fanling highway and including the widening of the highway over 1 km, the demolition of the Kiu Tau bridge, the renovation of the Kiu Tau pedestrian bridge, the diversion of the Tai Wo East and West roads as well as the associated roadways, cleaning up and landscaping works

Key figures of Lian Tang interchange highway erection project

Freyssinet proposed an integrated solution comprising the design, supply and installation of special and temporary equipment as well as the implementation of the cantilevered construction method with hoisting rig.

This extraordinary project required nearly 650,000 hours of work, i.e. 73,000 man-days, while at the peak of the work, 34 staff and 96 workers were employed and no less than ten different nationalities were represented. The installation of segments, up to 70 tonnes each, took place over a period of 36 months.

  • 3,500m
    Total length (meters)
  • 1,322
    Number of precast segments
  • 1,750t
    Total post-tensioning material (in tonnes)

A site under substantial constraints

Since delivery of the segments under the viaduct was impossible, our teams had no choice but to work over a busy overhead rail system (East Rail Line, also known as the MTR) that connects to the Chinese border with more than a million passengers per day.

This meant that traffic could only be stopped for 2 hours at night, and usually only one night a week.

At the same time, our engineers had to be careful to maintain a balance between the two parallel bridges in order to minimize the stresses in the piers.

The inventiveness of Freyssinet teams to the benefit of the customer

The only one that enabled to leave the area above the aerial rail system empty of all heavy equipment during the day, which greatly reassured the customer as well as the local authorities, was the use of a Special type Lifting Frame, on wheels, enabling the segment to be lifted from the rear of the span and transported on the deck.

This equipment enabled to obtain very short cycles, by bringing the segment, installing it and leaving the area in less than 2 h 10 min.

The Lifting Frame was equipped with a side shifting system, to work successively on the two parallel spans and guarantee the balance of the structure in the temporary phase.

Impressive hardware resources

To overcome all the experienced constraints and optimise the schedule, we used a large variety of lifting equipment:

  • 1 special type Lifting Frame unit, on wheels, capacity 65 tonnes
  • 1 pair of standard type Lifting Frames, on wheels, capacity 70 tonnes
  • Cable jacks (heavy lifting), using the Hébetec system
  • Multiple mobile cranes, up to a capacity of 750 tonnes
  • Multiple crawler cranes, up to a capacity of 500 tonnes
